Jim O'Hara sent me information describing
Holystoning
This was a very laborious task and one of the most detested jobs of the seamen. The stone was a half a fire brick made of sand. The stick was actually a swab handle. An indentation was worked in the top of the stone to receive the swab handle. This was then worked back and forth on each deck plank. Usually four times. A cadence was called by one of the men. The sailors wore shoes or boots. They usually scrub down the decks in their bare feet, but shoes were worn because "Holystoning" was done with a lye solution because of the grease or oil dripped on deck, such as around the catapults. Shortly after the war started, all weather decks were ordered painted (to improve camouflage). Nobody complained about painting the decks.. especially Jim O'Hara. |
