The Memorabilia has found a safer home

Update from Sandy Eskew - August 1st, 2010

The committee in charge of finding a new home for the memorabilia has approved the University of Utah's J. Willard Marriott Library. Roy Webb, Multimedia Archivist of Special Collections, will be in charge of preserving the memorabilia. Roy is also making all the memorabilia available to anyone researching the Salt Lake City CA25 or a member of her crew.

The original & delicate memorabilia that I have stored will now be preserved in a much safer environment. If you have material about the SLC that you would like to contribute, contact me and I will help you place it with this library. It's very important that we do whatever it takes to preserve this history.

I will continue to maintain the USS SLC CA25 Website and help the veterans and families with anything I can. There is adequate material set aside to go to each reunion as long as they keep having them.

We are very thankful that the library in Salt Lake City, UT. will preserve the history of the old Swayback Maru. The library is paying all the shipping expenses, so the Association will not be out any cost. And due to the fact that the membership is very low, the "no cost to the Association" is a major plus.

Added Information:
To those that might have wanted the memorabilia elsewhere, I just want to let you know that we've never been offered this type of service before. Most museums want an inventory of what you have and then they'll pick and choose the material they want. There is no promise that the material will be displayed or available for anyone researching the Swayback Maru. Like I mentioned before, there is adequate material available for the reunions. The material I've stored for 10-11 years would not have been on display at the reunions because of their delicate condition. Mike Asea, who takes care of the memorabilia at the reunions, says he has all the material he needs to make a great display. If anyone wishes to discuss this, please contact me at the phone number or email address below.

Thank you, Sandy.
