USS SLC...Enlisted Navy...John Baeumel

US FLAG John Baeumel died peacefully on July 5th, 2004. He was 90 years old and had a great life. Without a doubt one of the highlights was his time in the Navy and his USS SLC experiences and the many friends he made on ship. He will be missed.

Sandy

My dad, John Baeumel served on board the USS Salt Lake City from 1934-1936. He is 86 years old and resides in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He is living in an assited living facility and has access to e-mail.
He does not operate the computer. Someone prints the messages out for him so please put his name at the top of the "Message".

I am sure he would appreciate being added to your roster and receiving e- mails from any of his old shipmates.

One of the reasons I was looking on the internet was that after my father came home from the Navy, he and his father made a model of the ship. Over the years, it has deteriorated and I want to restore it. Its' about 5 feet long so it is no small task to fix.

I will retire in a couple years and this is a project I am looking forward to tackling - maybe sooner. I need some photos and any other information that may be available to help me restore it - unfortunately, the photo album that my father had came up missing when he had a sale and moved to the city. It's the one thing he misses.

At any rate , please contact him and forward any information you might have or places that I can contact.

Several of his shipmates listed in his "book of photos" were as follows:

W. L. Brazelton, S2c
R. Broadbent
Robert Belton Chambers, S1c
L. A. Fleming
D. L. Harris
Raymond Rimer, GM Striker ball-red-02 Deceased
Yeo Stokes

He also was involved in a rescue attempt of an airship called the Macon. He had a piece of the wreckage and donated it to the Ohio Historical Society.

He had a book on reunion in 1987 --#8 in Philadelphia- I think he attended. Also #12 in 1993. I also remember him going to the commissioning of a new USS Salt Lake City

Keep up the good work.

Bob Baeumel
