USS SLC...Enlisted Navy...Samuel G. Booras, PhM2c
Sam passed away on July 2nd, 2007 - Information from SLC Veteran, James O'Hara
Aug. 23, 2002
Dear Sandy,
My father Samuel G. Booras served on the USS SALT LAKE CITY.
He receive the Bronze Star and was a pharmacist' mate.
Also, my father and a shipmate were washed overboard,
thankfully he washed back on board-unthankfully the shipmate did not.
My father believes the person's name was Ott. I found
John T. S. Och, Lt. (jg)
which could easily be it. It says he died in the second battle of the Philippine Sea. Any hints on how I may pursue this? I am pretty poor at web
searching but getting better.
My father will be 78 or 79 this November( he lied on his birth
certificate to enlist early and since has always debated his year of
birth) plays handball twice a week with men 30-40 years his junior, and
golf’s twice a week.
He is more active than I am and also more active than all my friends. My
2 and 3 year old boys will sit for hour at the window to wait for him.
My father has expressed a desire to return to Japan. His last visit
there was during the war. Since you are familiar with where he was, can
you suggest anything in particular? What have other shipmates done?
Are any planning a trip? Since my father never talks about the war I
would appreciate any input you might have.
Thank You again for your website,
Gary Samuel Booras...Son
