USS SLC...Enlisted Navy...Bernard Hogan, Rate Unknown

US FLAG Bernard Hogan was born in 1916 and passed away in 1992
Nov., 2004

Dear Ms. Thompson-Eskew,

My father was a crew member of the Salt Lake City during the early 1930's (on board for sure in 1936, probably 1934-1938). As a youngster, I very much remember looking at his scrapbook from that time, but I no longer have much pertinent information, with the exception of his "shellback" certificate, dtd 20 May 1936. The certificate indicates that the SLC was enroute to Valparaiso Chile and is signed by Allan S. F(?) (the rest of the name is obscured by a ribbon that hangs from the seal). [Capt. Allan S. Farquhar, USN] However, the rank Captain, USN is visible on the other side of the ribbon.

My father's name was: Bernard Hogan

He enlisted in the Navy in 1933 or 1934 from Iowa,

I do not know his rank while aboard the SLC. However, he re-joined the navy at the outbreak of WWII and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. During the war he served in the carribbean on "sub-busters" and later as a plank owner on another cruiser the USS Pittsburg.

My father always spoke fondly of the SLC and I know he would be honored to be added to the web site. Hopefully, this minimal information is enough for inclusion of his name.

Thanks so much for establishing the website.

Sincerely,

Mike B. Hogan
