USS SLC..."Enlisted Navy...Kenneth D. Humphreys, F2c
Oct. 2 2000
I was on the Salt Lake City from 1944 to 1946. I was a Fireman 2c &
stayed in the Navy until I retired in 1968 as a BTC.
Everything I had about the SLC was destroyed, so I have no pictures or
anything for your website. The only pictures I have are from when I was
on recuiting in Houston, TX. I was on the SLC for two major battles and
I do have some stories....some you have heard and some you haven't.
There was a WT2c by the name of Ira T. Fletcher
that I kept in contact with until about 1953-54. He was in the produce
business with his dad. He had three 18 wheelers and would come to NW AR.
and buy tomatoes. He was killed a wreck (year not stated).

Update March 18th, 2001
Dear Sandy
My name is Don Jones and I served in the USN from 1954-1957. I am
sending you a picture of Ken Humphreys who served on SLC and is listed
on your site.
I met Ken at "A" School, Great Lakes in 1954 and served with him on USS
Shangri-La till my separation in July, 1957. I could not have met a
better friend nor mentor. In 1998, after about a six month search, I was
able to locate Ken along with two other former shipmates. We had a
reunion in Ken's hometown of Springdale, AR in Sept of 2000. The four
of us continue to stay in touch with each other via computer and plan
further get togethers.
I would listen with awe at some of the stories that Ken had told me about
his experiences on the Salt Lake City during WWII.
Your Father would be very proud of the work you have done on the SLC web
Site. I thank you for the enjoyment I have had reading about the SLC and her
crew.
Thanks,
Don Jones
