Harry LeRoy Jones Jr, 90, was born June 12, 1922 in Florence, Colorado and passed away on June 19, 2012 of Indianola, WA. Harry joined the Navy in 1940, serving aboard the USS Salt Lake City. Wounded in the battle of Savo Sea, he was sent to the Naval Hospital in Auckland New Zealand. He met his future wife on a blind date. After a five year mail courtship, Harry and Doreen were married February 8th, 1947 in Glenrock, Wyoming. Harry completed a distinguished 25-year navel career in Explosive Ordinance Disposal in 1965. He was a lifelong member of the Glenrock Masonic Lodge No. 22. Harry was also an accomplished carpenter. There was not much beyond his ability to build or repair. He spent many hours in his workshop on both practical and creative projects. Harry was a loving and devoted husband, an involved and caring father, grandfather and great grandfather. An exceptional friend and a truly remarkable person, he will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by Doreen, his wife of 65 years, his son Wayne (Cindy) and daughter Trudy (Tory), his grandchildren Brian and Jennifer and his great grandchildren Cortlynne and Ian. The family would like to thank Harry's caregivers, Anna Welsh, Bev Ford, Beth Nichols, Dr. Gary Gretch and his nurse Crystal. Their compassionate care allowed Harry to begin his final tour of duty from his home port. SLC Deck Log Oct. 1942 2004 SLC Reunion |
