U.S.S. SLC...USN...Joseph D. Kelley, FC2c
Joseph D. Kelley passed away on Mar. 14th, 1981. Info. from son James D. Kelley Joseph Don Kelley returned to Chadron, NE. at the end of the war. He married Geraldine Coyle and raised three children. He had a successful career as an auto parts salesman and store manager. He passed away in 1981 at the age of 76. Like most war veterans he never spoke about his combat duty. Now and then he would mention "The Swayback Maru" which we knew as the USS Salt Lake City. I do not recall him ever being in touch with any crewmates, but he did stay in contact with a person from basic training. Entering the Navy at age 36 he was twice the age of most of his shipmates. He did save a number of personal items from hs service which would be shared in time. |
