Sandy

My Dad, Beuford Kelley, 677 14 62, USNR V-6, served on the USS Salt Lake City from 1943-1945. As children he told us many stories about those days! He was very proud of "his ship".

He was awarded a Commendation for outstanding performance of duty- dated 31 December 1944. See Below

Thank You

Patsy Anderson, Dau.

Letter of Commendation

CA25/P15/MM USS Salt Lake City CA25 11-gwg  Dec. 31st, 1944

From:  Commanding Officer
To:  Kelley, Beuford, 677 14 62, S2c, USNR V-6
Subject:  Commendation

1. The Commanding Offier takes pleasure in commending you at mast for your recent outstanding performance of duty during the bombardments of IWO JIMA, Volcano Islands on 25 & 27 December, 1944.

2. On both occasions you were one of a group of four (4) men who took turn about in ramming 5" fun number 7 by hand after an early casualty to the power rammer and, in so doing, serviced that gun through-out the entire schedule without missing a buzzer while firing rapid salvo fire against the strong enemy installations on Japanese IMO JIMA.

3. This commendation will be made a part of your Service Record.
