USS SLC...Officer...Page Knight, Ensign
Sept. 12, 2003
My tour on the SLC started in June of 1935 at Mare Island, WA. after graduating from USNA as an Ensign.
I went through my tour working with the 1st Division, A Division, B Division, Gunner's Communication, Etc. The skipper was
Capt. Allan "Stubby" S. Farquhar, who did not care much for aviation.
I flew as observer in the old single float seaplanes with ?cart dog, Bravo recoveries and gave him great spots for the gunners which he would not believe.
The Capt. had a dog which required walking at San Clemento and he would "assign" volunteers.
The SLC was a great gunnery and engineering ship, getting many hash marks and always beating her sister ship, the Pensacola. She was a ship with a great skipper and crew.
I got my wings in 1939 and went on to scout bombers off the USS WASP CV7, CO PB44 Squadron in England, Hudson and P2's from Newfoundland, Air Group Cdm., PCO and CO NAS Cubi Point?, CO NAS North Island, etc.
The SLC got me off to a good start.
Best Regards
Page Knight
