USS SLC...Officer...Charles H. Maddox, Commander
Charles H. Maddox passed away September 1964
My grandfather is sitting next to
Captain Lewis Coxe, Commanding Officer
in this 1933 group picture of officers. They are dressed in their swords and gloves.
My grandfather was also a good friend of
Capt. Ellis M. Zacharias, from the Washington days
when he headed the British Empire Section for the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence,
and Zacharias headed the Far East Section. Their paths crossed many times,
as after this 1933 photo my grandfather commanded the cruiser USS Raleigh
in the 1938 Atlantic, then Summer 1941 commanded the destroyer USS Porter
and Destroyer Squadron 5 out of Pearl Harbor - before 7 December 1941.
