Hospitality

It would be hard to imagine that anywhere in the world there exists more gracious hospitality than that offered to the personnel of the USS Salt lake City and USS Northampton during our recent visit to Brisbane. As it was graciously offered it was enthusiastically accepted. Appearances, characteristics and character itself were mutually appreciated and admired. It is in this way, more than any other that a nation wins friends and confidence, that the word "alien" becomes meaningless, and the significance of the word "friend" deepens. The world grows smaller. The "largest island and the smallest continent" no longer is but a name signifying some strange far away place that is different. It is now the home of a charming people.

Altogether it was a very happy time and proof of the told truth that the way to make people like you is to like them, and the way to gain friends is to be one.

During our visit in Brisbane, the Seamen's Church Institute presented us with a box of book. [I will name a few of them in this Newsletter---Sandy E.]

Where the pavement Ends by John Russell
The Invader by Margaret L. Woods
The Fighting Slogan by H. A. Cody
and many more.

The books are not new, but ones which were presented to the Institute for distribution to ships making the Port of Brisbane. It was generous of the Institute however, to share their supply with us and it is hoped the books will be enjoyed.

Attention All Writers

The Rope Yarn, as official newspaper of the USS Salt Lake City, will conduct a ship-wide contest to obtain the best article of not more than 250 words upon the recent visit to Brisbane. The winners will receive Ship Service chits, and the best entries will be published in next weeks Rope Yarn, with a suitable award for each winning contestant.

No limitations are placed upon the specific subject to be taken, but each entry should deal with the writer's own experiences among the hospitable Australians. Suggested topics include: "Why I Enjoyed my Visit to Brisbane," "My Most Interesting Experience in Brisbane", or "My Most Enjoyable Day in Brisbane," but it is emphasized that any others of a similar nature will be equally acceptable.

Judges will be members of the Rope Yarn editorial staff, and their decisions will be final. General excellence will be the only basis for ranking the entries. Minor errors in grammar or spelling, for instance, will not prevent any article from winning a prize, although those deficiencies will be corrected before publication. Neatness will not be given undue weight, although it is obvious that legibility is essential. The contest will be open to all enlisted men on the ship, with the exception of any member of the Rope Yarn staff who is called upon to act as a judge.

To be considered, all entries must be submitted to the Chaplain's office not later than 1500 on next Tuesday. Articles may be written upon paper of any shape, size or color, but, if possible, they should be in ink.
