You Did Not Even Know Me

Is there something I can do, or is there something I can say
To thank you for this wonderful gift, of which I can never repay.

You gave everything you had, to protect everything I hold dear.
Yet, you asked for nothing in return for your pain, your sacrifice and your tears.

I cannot count the many things that I am grateful to you for.
Without your bravery all my freedoms could have been no more.

These days, life is something that people take for granted,
How dare we trample on the seeds that you so lovingly planted.

You fought and died in foreign lands to protect the freedom of our home.
The price of freedom was not too high for you to take it on as your own.

For you, veteran, I am truly thankful, and every day I will let it show.
Because you gave the precious gift of freedom
To someone you did not even know.

Who'll Fold the Flag?

An old veteran walked slowly to a school one day,
And he stopped to rest and watch the children play.
They looked at him for a moment, then went on with their game,
And he wondered to himself, would it have been the same?

If we hadn’t fought and paid freedom’s price,
What would their lives be like without our sacrifice?

A younger veteran soon joined him there on the lawn,
He walked with a limp, and one arm was gone.
He looked at the old man and said with a smile,
“I like to come watch them every once in a while.
The battles we fought were a long way from them,
but for the sake of these kids I’d do it again.”

The old veteran said, “You know I would too,
But young man, there’s something we’ve got to do.
We have to teach them while we have a way,
There’s more to life than just parties and play.
We have to teach them honor and pride,
About the price paid in blood by the ones who have died.
If we don’t share what we know while we have the chance,
Who’ll teach them the paths that the warriors dance?

A life without purpose is no life at all.
They have to know what they stand for, if they’re going to stand tall.
If we don’t take the time to pass our legacy on,
Then who’ll fold the Flag when the last veteran is gone?
