This information was sent to me by Dave Fatino, nephew to Anthony Compiano, who served on the USS Monaghan in the Aleutians during the Komandorski Battle.

The information below are messages between the Captain of the Monaghan, the USS Salt Lake City, CA25 and Admiral Kingman. Dave said sadly no reunion site exist for the Monaghan since all but six of the crew perished when she went down. Anthony Compiano took the pictures and the messages and was awarded the Silver Star during the Aleutian campaign. He transferred off the Monaghan a month before she went down.

From MONAGHAN to SALT LAKE CITY:

"Comdr. Hawkins, Congratulations of another usual SALT LAKE CITY excellent performance. Hope damage not serious. Sorry I had to stop smoke screening you but was ordered on torpedo attack. Hope to see you on arrival."

Signed: HORN

From SALT LAKE CITY to MONAGHAN:

"Captain Horn. Thanks a lot for you praises however on this ship we feel that DD's saved us all from a dammed cold bath. That attack was as gallant and better made then of the German's CC's at Jutland. We love you all. See you soon.

Regards, Hawkins

Message Admiral KINGMAN to MONAGHAN:

Upon what may be the eve of our separation and the conclusion of our assignment to my task force I would like to express to you my sincere thanks and appreciation for the vigorous leadership displayed and the super performance of duty by all hands. All done and Good Luck.

Admiral Kingman
