Right at the end of the war, John got word that his father had passed away back in Utah, so they released him from the crew of the SLC and put him on the USS Kidd (DD-661)on the way home. Before they got there they got a message to head for Japan, then on the way there the bombs were dropped and they got a message to go to Honolulu. He did end up back on the SLC later, helping to muster out those getting discharged, with Commander Brewer.
