USS SLC...Enlisted Navy...Robert Conley Parker
Robert C. Parker passed away on Aug. 27th, 2001
Aug. 30th, 2001
I just wanted to drop you a note and let you know what a great web
site you have and how excited I was to find it, although under
unusual circumstances.
My father was terminally ill with cancer
and while searching Monday morning for a photo of the SLC that I
could use as a tribute to go along with an old photo of him, I
stumbled across your site. I was excited to say the least and my
first thought was to share this great find with him.
He passed away Monday evening, Aug. 27th, 2001, having been in a light
coma for most of the day and unaware of my great discovery. I regret that
I will not have the chance to look at the photos and history of the SLC
with him and learn more about his experiences aboard ship and this time
in his life.
I bought him a USS Salt Lake City ball cap last October for
his birthday and he was as excited about that small gift as any in
my recent memory. He wore it proudly even as the chemo treatments
took what hair he had left.
Tonight as I write to you, we have just
returned from the visitation where his casket was draped with the
American flag in honor of his service to his country. Tomorrow we will
bury him, but your site will help keep that part of his past alive.
Respectfully,
Michael H. Parker, son
