Remembering V-J Day, August 14, 1945
The Day World War II Ended

FLAGBAR 501x15

Passage of 50 years has not dimmed the memories of that period in my life, three years on the "one-ship fleet,", the USS Salt Lake City (CA-25), a heavy cruiser, for August 1945, was:

August 5--enter port of Saipan, Mariana Islands
August 6--atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima
August 8--winter clothing issued. Underway at 1300 hours for Adak, Aleutian Islands
August 9--atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki
August 13--crossed International Date Line
August 14--entered port at Adak, Aleutian Islands, and at 1300 hours learned that the war was over

While enroute to Adak, the Salt Lake City received orders to proceed to northern Honshu, Japan, to cover the occupation of the Ominato Naval Base.

At this period, while serving on the Salt Lake City, I was in charge of the Shop's post office with rating of mailman second class.
