USS SLC..."Enlisted Navy"...Elmer E. Potter, MM2c
Elmer Potter passed away in 1989
May 4th, 2000
My father, Elmer E. Potter, served on the USS Salt Lake City from 1941
until sometime in 1943, I think. He was rated as MM2c and probably higher
before he was transferred to another vessel.
In 1989 he died of Mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lung
associated with asbestos exposure. His exposure to asbestos happened
during the battles of the Salt Lake City, especially. He was very fond
of the Salt Lake City and I think proud of his time on her but
rarely talked about his experiences there.
I wonder if other men have contracted this horrible disease. It is best
treated if found early. Unfortunately my father discovered his disease in
the final stage and only lived 3 months after diagnosis (age 66).
I don't know if anyone knowing of his death and disease would help someone
else be treated sooner. It is nearly untreatable but treatment can be
better with a better outcome if treated early.
Thank you for all your work for the men of the USS Salt Lake City. It is a
blessing for the families of the Veterans as well as the Veterans
themselves.
Sincerely,
Janet Potter Stephan

Dear Sandy,
Thank you so much for your email. I think your website is wonderful and
really enjoy it. My Dad, Elmer E. Potter,MM2c, would have enjoyed it, too,
had he lived longer.
I wouldn't mind at all if you choose to include my Dad in your website. If
his illness, mesothelioma, could bring awareness to others and help them get
treatment sooner that would be wonderful.
Sincerely,
Janet Potter Stephan
