Stephen J. Scott enlisted in the Navy on Jan. 15th, 1935 at the age of 18 in Houston, TX. In April of 1935 he was assigned to "B" Division of the USS SLC. He served on the SLC until his discharge as a WT2c on Dec. 31st, 1938.

On May 13th, 1941 he was called to active duty in the USNR and was assigned shore duty in Toleda, OH. and Chicago, IL. In June, 1942, he was assigned to the USS MERCURY AK42. He served on the USS MERCURY as CWT until Sept. of 1944. After that he attended Boiler School in Philadelphia, PA. In Feb. of 1945 he was assigned to the USS GENERAL W. G. HAAN PA-158 and served on her until May 27th, 1946 when he was discharged from Great Lakes Receiving Station.
