The lowest buck private in the Army or apprentice seaman in the Navy receives the equivalent of $1700 a year, according to the Office of War Information.

OWI said the estimate was made by Representative Patman of Texas, assisted by the War and Navy Department and the Veterans Administration.

It gave the following breakdown:

Cash income, $50. per month $600.00
Food, $1.50 per day $574.50
Barrack shelter, $10. per month $120.00
Clothing and equipment $170.00
Medical, dental, hospital care $100.00
Saved on insurance $63.40
Saved on cigarettes $10.00
Saved on laundry $32.50
Saved on postage, barber bills $28.65
Total $1700.00

Soldiers and sailors on duty outside the United States can by cigarettes which are exempt from the seven cents Federal tax. In this country, the price of smokes and other articles in post exchanges and ship's service stores are slightly lower than what the civilian pays.

Acts of Congress, state laws and the program of the American Red Cross allow service men many advantages such as lower income taxes, free legal advice, and unemployment compensation, preference in civil service jobs, re-instatement by employer, insurance and free hospital and medical care.

Who says that Uncle Sam doesn't take care of his own?
