Be It Resolved by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah, that the following statement of gratitude and appreciation of this community be forwarded to Captain Ernest G. Small, Commanding Officer of the Cruiser Salt Lake City, and its crew for their heroic action in the Savo Island battle on October 11th and 12th, 1942, news of which has just been released:

To Captain E. G. Small, Commander,
And the entire crew of the
Cruiser Salt Lake City:

A ship is only as valiant as its Commander and crew; their valor, courage and skill make her a living personal entity. Through your intrepid and skillful action during the Savo Island battle the Cruiser Salt Lake City has become heroic, a symbol of American fighting spirit. And Salt Lake City is greatly honored to have its name emblazoned in the glory that you have so meritoriously won.

To you and your valiant crew Salt Lake City extends its deepest gratitude and appreciation for this signal honor. May kind providence protect and preserve you.

/S/ George Keysor

To the Mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah

Dear Sir:

I acknowledge with thanks the receipt of the copy of the resolution passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City on January 7, 1943 in which the Board expressed its gratitude and appreciation for the services rendered by the ship's company of the U.S.S. SALT LAKE CITY in the night action off Savo Island October 11-12, 1942. It is with pride I report that on that occasion every officer and man acted as a fighting entity. It is not improbable that the ship absorbed with its name, the fortitude, the unity of purpose, and the will to achieve, that has characterized Salt Lake City from its founding. The ship is proud of its name.

On January 2, 1943, I was detached from command of the U.S.S. SALT LAKE CITY. I am forwarding to the present commanding officer, Captain Bertram J. Rodgers, U.S. Navy, the copy of the resolution and a copy of this letter. I know that the resolution will be held as a prized possession.

Very sincerely yours,

Ernest G. Small, Captain, U.S. Navy.

B. J. Rogers, Captain, U.S. Navy
