USS SLC...Enlisted Navy...Homer C. Tullos, GM1c
Jul. 20th, 2004 Homer's deceased date unknown...Info. from SLC Veteran James Beard, GM2c Comments from SLC Veteran James O'Hara, S1c In the current issue of "The Saltshaker", I was sadden to read of the passing of Homer C. Tullos. As you may know, Tullos was a leading Gunner's Mate in the 9th Div. I'm proud to say that he was a good friend of mine....both aboard ship and on the beach. He was very pleasant to be around. I liked his "Trade Mark" very much. He would always either be whistling, humming or softly singing his favorite song (at the time)... "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again". He was a true leader. I watched his influence on men that were transferred to the CASSIN YOUNG... such as Gilbert "Gib" G. LeBeau, GM3c, W. R. Bradford, S1c & Unknown Robinson. All Gunner's Mates and very good ones...& not to omit Billy Joe Boegen, S1c. I had a summer semester of machine shop training that almost came in handy up in the Aleutians. Tullos showed me a cylinder about 1/2" x 2" with a hole through the middle. It was in two pieces and Tullos said "there are no spare parts ...so the gun was out of commission". He was rather disgusted. I told him I could make him a new piece, because in passing thru the machine shop on the way to the Mess Hall, I saw the lathes, etc. Tullos then went to our Division Officer and had the part made aboard ship.
