US FLAG Elmer G. Van Buren passed away on June 18th, 2000. Information from daughter, Kathleen Van Buren
May 31st, 2017

Hello Sandra,

My name is Kathleen M. Van Buren. My father Elmer G. Van Buren served on the USS Salt Lake City during WWII. I was browsing thru your website and was looking for photos of my father. He was a SFC in R division and in the Group ID#120 Section 2. Number 11 is my father.

I wanted you to know that my father died on June 18, 2000, and he is buried at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI.

He was a patient at the Pearl Harbor Base Hospital, when the Japanese attacked in 1941. He said the hospital was bombed during the attack and even though he was very sick with the measles, he helped others to get out and seek cover because the Japanese were shooting at them as they flew over. He was eighteen at the time.

I appreciate your effort and that of others who contributed to the USS Salt Lake City website.

Thank you!
Sincerely,
Kathleen (Kathy) Van Buren
#11 in Group Picture #120 "R" Division
