Letter from Lloyd F. Wilbur

Dear Sandy

I have been looking through some more things and found some that may be of interest to you. They are some of my personal records they sent to me. They would tell you where your father was at during the same time. Your father and I would have likely gone aboard ship on the same day in Oct. of 1943 and possibly left it the same day in Dec. of 1945. When we went aboard in Oct. of 1943, there was a pretty large number of green recruits being shipped out. Approximately 1000 on the Salt Lake. Some were selected to stay aboard ship and some went to commando training in Pearl Harbor. Looking back now, I am sure we were the lucy ones. Sorry I can not remember your father, but will look at the web site again in a day or so.

The 4th Division picture, I'm guessing, but would say it was taken sometime in 1945. We were all connected to Turret 4. We took care of the ships deck, paint and also the 8" gun turret and maintenance on it. There were Seaman 2c & 1c, Coxswains, Boatswains Mates 2c & 1c, Turret Captain & Gunner's Mates 1c, 2c & 3c. I guess we all had something to do.
