USS SLC...USN...Robert Francis Winn, BM2c

US FLAG Robert passed away on May 10th, 1979. Information from son Jim Winn
Nov. 29th, 2008

Good evening.

My name is Michael Winn and I live in Massachusetts. My grandmother recently passed away and my family is in the process of cleaning out my grams house. During our cleaning today we found a “war journal” of the USS Salt Lake City that lists its heroic conduct during WWII and a list of the crew. This journal was with all of my grandfather’s war documents. My grandfather is listed as a member of the crew and his name is spelled R. F. Wynn BM2 (Robert Francis). He is also listed on your fantastic website.

When my grandfather entered the Navy for some reason his name was spelled Wynn instead of the Winn. We have all of his Navy records except his service on this ship. Most of the war my grandfather spent on LST’s and LCT 690.

I have read through the deck log from 1943 till the end and could not find a record of my grandfather transferring to this ship.

I am wondering if you could help. My father is greatly intrigued by all of this as my grandfather NEVER talked about the war and his service.

If you have time and can help my family would be indebt to you

As we were reviewing your website today my father and I tossed back the idea of traveling to the re-union to meet some of these incredible servicemen and their families.

Kind regards
Mike Winn
