Obituary of Retired Vice Adm., Bertram J. Rodgers

Ex-Navy Officer from City was buried at Sea.

Retired Vice Adm. Bertram J. Rodgers, 89, a native of the Knoxville section of Pittsburgh, died Nov. 30 in Coronado, CA.

Admiral Rodgers graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1916, and served in the submarine and lighter-than-air services after World War I. He was a member of the crews of the dirigibles Macon & Akron.

He participated in amphibious landings in Southern France during WWII before being transferred to the Pacific Theater as commander of Task Group II of the 8th Fleet. He served in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa Operations.

Admiral Rodgers was awared the Navy Cross, Croix de Guerre with Palm, Legion of Honor, British Honorary Commander of the Bath, and the Chinese Order of Pao Ting.

Admiral Rodgers and his wife, Marie, who died in 1981, both were born in the Knoxville section.

Services were held in Coronado, and Adm. Rodgers was buried at sea.


US FLAGBAR

Rodgers served as a wartime commanding officer on the USS Salt Lake City from Jan. 1943 to Sept. 1943. While on the ship, Adm. Rodgers had the rank of Captain and lead several naval bombardments. The most noteable was the CO during the "Battle of the Komadorskis" on March 26, 1943

With heavy heart I must report to you that death has come to our beloved shipmate, Vice Adm. Bertram J. Rodgers, 89, Nov. 30, 1983. Requiem Mass was said by shipmate Father Richard Hodge ball-red-02 Deceased. Burial will be at sea. Shipmate Del Bartlett ball-red-02 Deceased & I, Paul H. Grevencamp ball-red-02 Deceased attended the mass. Also attending from our Assoc. was shipmate Dr. C. W. Frame, DDS ball-red-02 Deceased, & wife.
