USS SLC..."Enlisted Navy"...George E. Blackburn, GM3c

US FLAG Sadly, George passed away in his sleep on Jan. 10, 1992. After many years, he is still missed by our family.

George E. Blackburn started working as a truck driver and salesman for the then "Original Wonder Bakery" in Pittsburgh, PA. He held this job from Sept. 1940 until his naval induction in Sept. 1942. At the age of 21, the war began for George as a Naval recruit at the U.S. Naval Training station in Great Lakes, IL. He graduated with class number "C0973" on Sept. 22, 1942.

He received orders after basic training and reported to active naval duty service on the USS SALT LAKE CITY, CA25, where he served as a Gunner's Mate in an 8" Gun Turret.

He served and saw active duty from September, 1942 until his discharge after wars end. He received an Honorable Discharge on November 11, 1945. His official separation documents were issued from the U.S.N. Personnel Separation Center, Sampson, NY.

When released from active service, he was given a total of $296.22 as return home travel expenses, $18.55 was issued to cover the trip from New York to Pittsburgh, PA.

George saw action in many sea battles, engagements and bombardments. These all lead up to being part of the allied occupation task force in Japan.

For his heroism in the face of determined enemy force, George E. Blackburn, Gunner's Mate (T) 3/c V6, United States Navy, earned these honors and decorations.

  • American Campaign service medal
  • WWII Good Conduct Medal
  • Special Commendation letter from the commanding officer, Capt. Bertram J. Rodgers, USN, USS Salt Lake City CA25
  • Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Medal with 7 Battle Stars
  • Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 Battle Star
  • World War II Victory Medal

After the war, George went back to the bakery business he knew well. He worked for the National Biscuit company as a route truck driver and salesman. He earned many awards over the years. The highest award was the safe driver working over 15 years without incident. Many years past until a massive heart attack forced him to retire with a work related permanent disability.

George lived many years after the war and truck driving. He beat the odds against a disability and chronic heart condition. His time was filled with winter bowling, summer golf and generally enjoying life, family and friends.
