USS SLC..."Enlisted Navy"...George E. Blackburn, GM3c
Sadly, George passed away in his sleep on Jan. 10, 1992. After many years, he is still missed by our family.
George E. Blackburn started working as a truck driver and salesman for the
then "Original Wonder Bakery" in Pittsburgh, PA. He held this job from
Sept. 1940 until his naval induction in Sept. 1942. At the age of 21, the
war began for George as a Naval recruit at the U.S. Naval Training station
in Great Lakes, IL. He graduated with class number "C0973" on Sept. 22,
1942.
After the war, George went back to the bakery business he knew well.
He worked for the National Biscuit company as a route truck driver and
salesman. He earned many awards over the years. The highest award was
the safe driver working over 15 years without incident. Many years past
until a massive heart attack forced him to retire with a work related
permanent disability. |
