Jan. 1st, 1944- Anchored in FUNAFUTI HARBOR, FUNAFUTI ATOLL, ELLICE ISLANDS in Berth B-9. - NO REMARKS
Jan. 2nd, 1944 - Anchored as before. - NO REMARKS Jan. 3rd, 1944 Volkening, A. H., Pfc, USMC was detached to report to Candidates Detachmen, Camp Elliot, San Diego, CA. Wilhite[Willhite], R. M.[N.], SF2c received contusion and fracture of left great toe. Injury occurred while at work by dropping a steel bar on his foot, negligence not apparent. Treatin in Sick Bay and man returned to duty. Jan. 4th-5th, 1944 -Anchored as before. - NO REMARKS Jan. 6th, 1944 - Anchored as before Fitzgerald, P. J., S2c, while carrying a jug of water, stumbled and fell, breaking jug and causing lacerations of palm of right hand and thumb of left hand. Treated in Sick Bay and returned to duty. Negligence not apparent. Jan. 7th, 1944- Anchored as before - Received stores on board Jan. 8th, 1944 - Anchored as before. Due to weather conditions, ship is on 15 minutes notice. [08-12]- Took departure from FUNAFUTI ATOLL, ELLICE ISLANDS for main bettery firing exercise and training events. [16-18]- Commenced maneuvering on various courses and speeds to enter port. Anchoring in Berth 9 Jan. 9th, 1944 - Anchored as before. Taking on ammunition from USS RAINIER. Heavy rain squalls passing over. Jan. 10th, 1944- Anchored as before. The following named men were transferred this date with bags, hammocks, records and accounts to report to the CO, USS SANGAY for further transfer to Receiving Station, Navy #128, FFT to NTS San Diego, CA. to report not later than Feb. 19, 1944. Anderson, Robert Edward, AerM2c, Connal, Douglas Robert, RM1c, Miller, Arthur Lawrence, Y1c Little, Rex B., Commander reported for duty as Gunner Officer on board this vessell Took on ammunition and stores Jan. 11th, 1944- Anchored as before Woods, George C., AS, USN suffered a dislocated right shoulder while diving during swimming call. Sent to sick bay for streatment. Negligence not apparent. Jan. 12th, 1944- Anchored as before - NO REMARKS Jan. 13th, 1944- Anchored as before Donnel, David William, S1c and Grahn, Howard E., Lt. Comdr. were transferred to Dispensary, 5th Marine Defense Battalion, Funafuti, Ellice Islands. Jan. 14th, 1944- Anchored as before Transferred Karins, John Joseph, SF2c to the USS POCOMOKE, fft to some activitiy where dental prosthesis is available. Jan. 15th, 1944- Anchored as before. Blackburn, George E., S1c received injury to the head, concussion of brain, while falling against No. 4 40mm gun mount. This man was observed waling normally around the gun mount, suddenly collasping in a dead faint. The cause of fainting is unknown. As he fell, his head struck the steel of the gun carriage, causing a concussion of the brain. Extent or seriousness of the injury not known. Negligence not apparent and not caused by any misconduct. He was taken to Sick Bay for treatment and admitted to the Sick List. Jan. 16th - 18th, 1944-Anchored as before. - NO REMARKS Jan. 19th, 1944 - Anchored as before. McInturff, Allen L., Lt. reported aboard for duty as the relief of Frame, Carl H., Lt. Comdr. Lt. Comdr. Frame left the ship on Jan. 20th, 1944 to report to the U.S. Naval Hospital, Corona, CA. for duty. Jan. 20th, 1944-Anchored as before. NO REMARKS Jan. 21st, 1944-Anchored as before. Intermittent heavy rainfalls Staley, James Bishop, Ensign reported aboard for duty. Jan. 22nd, 1944-Anchored as before. NO REMARKS Jan. 23rd, 1944-Getting underway-Commenced test firing of all automatic weapons. Jan. 24th - 28th, 1944 - Test firing weapons. Practicing Drills. Jan. 29th, 1944 [08-12]-Assignment: Bombardment of WOTJE and TAROA in the MARSHALL ISLANDS. Two enemy planes, identified as Jap "BETTYS" sighted on horizon, distance about 15 miles. Sounded General Quarters. Planes circled the formation, remaining in the distance. Fighter planes vectored toward enemy planes. Radar contact on enemy planes faded, distance 33 miles. Secured from General Quarters. Set condition of readiness I in the AA batteries, condition III throughout the rest of the ship. Jan. 30th, 1944 - NO REMARKS Jan. 31st, 1944 Lookouts sighted about twenty planes going in to bomb TAROA ISLAND. Sighted large explosion on TAROA ISLAND, bombing attack under way. Sounded General Quarters for bombardment of TAROA ISLAND. Squally and rather heavy sea. |
