In accordance with authority contained in Bureau of Navigation Dispatch No. 120827 of May, 1942, Brittain, Joe Tillman executed Acceptance and Oath of Office as an Electrician (Acting Appointment), US Navy, to rank from April 29, 1942, and reported to Commanding Officer for duty this date.

Steaming as before. 2325: Passed through rain squall. Lightening to southwest, low black clouds, smooth sea, gentle breeze, poor visibility, stormy weather. 2355: Heavy rain, visibility zero.

Steaming in condition of Readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 16

[12-16 Hours]
Steaming as before. Commenced maneuvering incident to receiving one airplane from USS PENSACOLA and transferred personnel to that ship. Motor whaleboat from USS PENSACOLA came alongside to receive the planes crew and the following personnel: Pursuant to visual dispatch from Commander Task Force 16, Arling, Arthur E., Lt. (jg), D-V(S), USNR, with and in charge of Newmark, Stephen M., P2c, V-6, USNR & Rundall, Paul S., CP(AA), USN, were detached from this vessel and transferred to the USS PENSACOLA for temporary additional duty.

Mr. Keith Wheeler, News Correspondent, of the Chicago Times, was transferred to the USS PENSACOLA for temporary additional duty.

Steaming as before. Passed Walpole Island abeam. Sighted USS FLUSSER-DD-368, taking patrolling station ahead of this vessel.

Steaming in condition of readiness II with USS FLUSSER in company, acting as anti-submarine screen, making passage to Noumea, New Calidonia.

[8-12 Hours]
Steaming as before. Commenced maneuvering incident to entering port. Captain at the Conn., Exec. Officer, and Navigator on the Bridge. 1040: Moored starboard side to port side of HMS BISHOP DALE in Great Road Harbor, Noumea, New Calidonia.

Ships present: USS TANGIER, USS FLUSSER, HMS BISHOP DALE, SS E. J. HAMRY.

Commenced fueling ship from HMS BISHOP DALE. Hoisted out and transferred plane CS-16 to USS TANGIER. The Captain called officially on Commander US Naval Forces, Southwest Pacific.

Moored as before. Commenced preparations forgetting underway. Received 1200 gals. aviation from USS TANGIER. Completed fueling from the HMS BISHOP DALE, having received 241,469 gals. fuel oil. 1558: Got underway for scheduled operations in compliance with COM SO WES PAC FOR. Captain at the Conn., Exec. Officer, and Navigator on the Bridge. Standing out of Great Road, Noumea, New Calidonia.

Steaming with USS FLUSSER acting as anti-submarine screen. 0151: Sighted loom of Cape Morleton, Moreton Island, Australia, distance, 68 miles. 0235: Sighted loom of Double Island Point Light, distance 65 miles.

[4-8 Hours]
Steaming as before, maneuvering incident to taking pilot Liley, O. H. aboard. Commenced maneuvering to standing into Northwest Channel, Moreton Bay, Brisbane, Australia, Pilot at the Conn., Captain, Exec. Office, & Navigator on the Bridge.

[8-12 Hours]
Steaming as before, standing into Brisbane Roads and up the Brisbane River to Brisbane, Australia.

The following men were discharged from this vessel and the US Naval Service with honorable discharges, by reason of expiration of enlistment:
Goldfinch, William R., S1c, USN, Claudmantle, Jr., Arthur, BM2c, USN, Roberts, John M., BM2c, USN ball-red-02 Deceased, Murray, Hugo A., S1c, USN.

All the above men re-enlisted on May 23, 1942, for four full years.

1126: Moored port side to Hamilton Stores Wharf, Bisbrane, Australia.

Pilot O. H. Liley left ship. The Captain called officially on COMTASKFOR 44. Dr. C. R. Wilburg came aboard and granted practique. Received R.A.F.A. KALUMBA alongside to starboard and at 1530 commenced receiving fuel.

The following men left the ship for temporary shore patrol duty.

Macaroni; 1500 lbs. rice; 1000 lbs. granulated sugar; 192 lbs. baking powder; 25 gals. vanilla flavoring; 224 lbs. salt; 8100 lbs. wheat flour; 1476 lbs. tinned apples; 1008 lbs. tinned apricots; 1974 lbs. tinned peaches; 1008 lbs. tinned pears; 1456 lbs. roasted coffee beans; 200 lbs. bulk tea; 15 gals. tomato catsup.

Ramsey, L. D., Lt.(jg), USN, left the ship to report to the Senior Patrol Officer, Shore Patrol Headquarters, Brisbane, Australia, for temporary duty.

The following men left the ship on temporary shore patrol duty in Brisbane, Australia.

Small, Ernest G., Captain, USN ball-red-02 Deceased reported aboard for duty as Commanding Officer. Took Command of Ship on May 26th, 1942

Completed provisioning ship, having received the following:
1200 lbs. celery; 2000 lbs. oranges; 760 lbs. grapefruit from G. & W. Lambert; 1008 lbs. of butter, 30,150 lbs. potatoes; 2000 lbs. onions from the Producers Co-op Dist. Society, Ltd.; 3000 lbs. beef, 600 lbs. yeast; 2400 dozen eggs; 2000 lbs. apples; 1200 lbs. cabbage, from Cervetto & Co.; 1006 lbs. pork from Hutton & Foggit Jones; 500 lbs. cheese from Maxam Cheese Products.

Inspected as to quality by Jacoby, James M., Lt.(jg) (MC), USN, & as to quantity by Davis, A. G., CCstd, USN.

The following men left the ship on shore patrol:

Moored as before-Brisbane, Australia

Stevens, H. F., S1c, USN, Deceased returned on board from the Brisbane Gen. Hosp., having suffered multiple injuries, possible fractures of the right clavicle and the nose; and lacerations of the forehead & left elbow, when in an automobile accident at the Virginia Bridge, at 1300, May 25th. The man rented an automobile while ashore on authorized liberty, and was involved in the accident when the car's steering wheel locked, causing the vehicle to crash into a telephone pole. Stevens was NOT intoxicated and the accident was NOT the results of his own misconduct. There were 3 other occupants in the car at the time of the accident and they were taken to the Brisbane Gen. Hosp. for treatment. Stevens was admitted to the Binnacle List.

Assembled crew at quarters for inspection by Commanding Officer & for ceremonies incident to Change of Command. Pursuant to BuNav order 3033, file Nav-3-RAV of April, 1942, Captain Ernest G. Small, USN, assumed Command of this vessel vice Captain Ellis M. Zacharias, USN, relieved.

The following men left the ship for shore patrol.
