Feb. 1st, 1944- Steaming in condition of Readiness II.
Conducting bombardment operations against WOTJE ISLAND, WOTJE ATOLL; TAROA ISLAND, MALOELAP ATOLL; MARSHALL ISLANDS, to render those bases usless to enemy for air operations. Feb. 2nd. 1944 Conducting bombardment operations against WOTJE ISLAND, WOTJE ATOLL; TAROA ISLAND, MALOELAP ATOLL; MARSHALL ISLANDS, to render those bases usless to enemy for air operations. Feb. 3rd, 1944 Maneuvering to stand into MAJURO LAGOON, MAJURO ISLAND group. Commenced maneuvering to go alongside USS TALLULAH for refueling. Received aviation gasoline. Hale, Robert B., Lt.(jg) was detached from this vessel and ordered to report to the Superintendent of the U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY, Annapolis, Maryland for duty assigned. Leaving MAJURO LAGOON. Received landing barge with ammunition alongside to port, commenced taking on ammunition. Feb. 4th, 1944 McClung, Worth D., Jr., SK1c was transferred to the USS PORTLAND with bag, hammock, records and accounts for duty. Returned to anchor in MAJURO LAGOON Feb. 5th, 1944-Left MAJURO LAGOON - NO REMARKS Feb. 6th, 1944-Steaming as before - NO REMARKS Feb. 7th, 1944 Set Condition I throughout the ship for scheduled bombardment of WOTJE. Sounded Flight Quarters for launching spotting plane for scheduled exercises. Commenced firing on WOTJE ISLAND with Main Battery to starboard. Ceased firing. Feb. 8th-10th, 1944 - Steaming as before - NO REMARKS Feb. 11th, 1944 - Steaming as before Sounded General Quarters for scheduled bombardment of WOTJE ISLAND. Launched scout planes to starboard for spotting bombardment. Seized firing and recovered planes. Secured from General Quarters and set condition III. Feb. 12th, 1944 Proceeded to port in MAJURO HARBOR, MAJURO ISLAND. Anchored in Berth E-30, MAJURO HARBOR, MAJURO ISLAND in 36 fathoms of water with 90 fathoms of chain to the port anchor. Hosey, W. B., Lt. was detached from this vessel to proceed by transportaion furnished to report to CO, US NAVAL AIR STATION, Dallas, TX., for temporary duty involving flying instruction. Dahlen, Vincent Rankin, Lt.(jg) and Nichols, Clarence Carver, Lt. were detached from this vessel to proceed by grovernment transportation to report to Commandant of nearest Naval District for temporary duty and further assignment by BuPers. Feb. 13th, 1944 Transferred the following men to the USS LASSEN, FFT to nearest Receiving Ship or Station on the West Coast of the US for assignment to duty in new construction. Holt, Ben Edward, St1c, Patterson, William David, St1c, Turner, Willie, Jr., St2c [16-18]-Underway - maneuvering to enter channel incident to leaving MAJURO HARBOR, MAJURO ATOLL. Set condition Zebra throughout the ship for leaving port. Feb. 14th, 1944 Steaming as before. Intermittent gun flashes on the horizon throughout the watch indicatin friendly forces bombarding TAROA ISLAND. Bombarding WOTJE ISLAND. Feb. 15th-18th, 1944-Bombarding WOTJE ISLAND. Feb. 19th, 1944 Returned to Berth B-15, MAJURO HARBOR. Refueled and took on ammunition. Serazin, Robert Joseph, Ensign reported on board this vessel for duty. Feb. 20th, 1944 Rich, Ivan T., Ensign was detached and transferred to LST 119 FFT to nearest naval district in the US for further assignment to duty. Successfully completed operation on Yentzen, Robert Willie, F2c. Diagnosis: Acute Appendicites. Surgeon: Lt. R. N. Whitehead. Feb. 21st, 1944-NO REMARKS Feb. 22nd, 1944 The following named men were transferred to LST 119 FFT to Navy #128, FAGTRAN to nearest ship or station on West Coast of US FFT to NAVTRANSTA, Bainbridge, MD., for instruction USNA Prep School Detail: Heickman[Heichman], Harry Preston, EM3c, Ogle, Robert Lee, EM3c, Peal, W. R., F1c Feb. 23rd, 1944- NO REMARKS Feb. 24th, 1944 Nantz[Nants], Stanley J., Jr., Ensign reported aboard for duty with orders. Feb. 25th-27th, 1944 - NO REMARKS Feb. 28th, 1944 Wiechman, R. W., EM1c received scalp laceration when he lost his grip on sea ladder while ascending to well deck from whale boat and fell. He was admitted to sick bay for immediate treatment and released. Feb. 29th, 1944 Keberline, Floyd J., Captain, USMC was transferred with bag, hammock, and staff returns to report to the mainland of the US FFT via commercial conveyance to Headquarters, Fleet Marine Force, San Diego Area, Camp Elliot, San Diego, CA. for duty. |
