June 1st, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Moored at Hamilton Stores Wharf, Brisbane, Australia Receiving fresh water & telephone services from the dock. Ship's present: H.M.A.S. AUSTRALIA, H.M.A.S. HOBART, USS HELM, USS BAGLEY, USS MUGFORD, USS S-18, USS TULSA & various merchant vessels and small craft. S.O.P.A, COMTASKFOR 44. [8-12 Hours] Moored as before Hoisted out the following planes as indicated: CS-15 to Starboard, pilot, Ensign J. D. Taylor, USNR & St. Onge, J. W., ARM2c, USN CS-14 to Starboard, pilot, Ensign R. D. Drodz, USNR & Tolhurst, F. H., ARM2c, USN CS-16 to Starboard, pilot, Ensign Russell P. Morse, USNR & Donald Rholl, ARM3c, USN CS-13 to Starboard, pilot, Lt. (jg) W. J. Tate, USN & Morgan, Claude, ARM1c, USN Lt. Winsor G. Gale, USN, returned aboard ship after completing temporary shore patrol duty. 0850: The Captain [Ernest G. Small], left the ship for an official call on COMTASKFOR 44 in the H.M.A.S. AUSTRALIA. Returned at 0953. Morse, R. P., Ensign, USNR admitted to Sick Bay. Diagnosis: D V. Gastroenteritis, Acute, by Lt. (jg) J. M. Jacoby, (MC), USN. 1046: Hoisted in the above listed aircraft on starboard. [12-16 Hours] Moored as before. Hoisted out CS-14, pilot, Lt. (jg) E. H. Katenkamp. Commenced making preparations for getting underway. 1245: Set material condition "Zed" [modified]. 1304: Got underway and stood down the Brisbane River. Pilot J. M. Aherne came on board. Hoisted the above listed aircraft aboard starboard. Got underway for Moreton Bay, Australia, in accordance with COMTASFOR 44. Pilot J. M. Aherne at the Conn., Captain, Exec. Officer, & Navigator on the Bridge. 1455: Captain took the Conn., anchored in Berth C-4, Moreton Bay, Australia. Pilot J. M. Aherne left the ship. June 3rd, 1942 [8-12 Hours] Anchored in Berth C-1, Moreton Bay, Australia Underway on signal from COM TASK FORCE 44 for scheduled exercises. Captain at the Conn., Exec. Officer, & Navigator on the Bridge. Standing out of Moreton Bay, Australia in company with HMAS AUSTRALIA & HMAS HOBART, conforming to the channel. USS HENLEY & USS MUGFORD joined formation. [18-20 Hours] Steaming as before. Set condition to Readiness I in the main & 5" AA Batteries for drill. Radar contact surface craft. Commenced firing 5" battery to port starshell illumination. One casualty. The casualty was to Chapman, Charles, S1c, USNR; diagnois: compound fracture of little finger on right hand. Negligence not apparent. Occurred while carrying a 5" AA projectile from ready box to his gun; he slipped and fell, keeping his right hand over the base of the projectile; the projectile struck the deck, crushing the right hand against the deck. This man was admitted to Sick Bay. [20-24 Hours] Steaming as before. Sighted Caloundra head light. Stopped all engines. Anchored in Moreton Bay, Australia. Dispatched anchorage patrol in charge of Bracken, Robert O., Ensign, USNR June 4th - 5th, 1942 Steaming in and out Moreton Bay, Australia doing drills & exercises. On June 5th, Camper, N. R., MAtt1c, USN was honorable discharged from this vessel and the US Naval Service by reason of expiration of his enlistment. On Jun. 6th, 42, he re-enlisted for four (4) full years. [12-16 Hours] Maneuvering incident to mooring to port side to Pinkenba Railroad Wharf, Brisbane, Austrailia. [16-20 Hours] The following men left the ship on temporary shore patrol duty. |
June 6th, 1942 [8-12 Hours] Moored port side to Pinkenba Railroad Wharf, Brisbane, Australia Received aboard for us in the General Mess the following fresh stores 1500 lbs. oranges; 1005 lbs. grapefruit; 1010 lbs. pears; 2010 lbs. apples; 1500 doz. eggs; 2005 lbs. fish; 1220 lbs. fresh cabbage; 1500 lbs. turkey. Inspected by: Waites [Waits], M. L., Acting Pay Clerk, USN & Gorohoff, George, PhM1c, UNS . [12-16 Hours] Moored as before. The following men left the ship on shore patrol duty: |

J., Cox, USN to 1st Evacuation Hospital, Brisbane, Australia. D.V. fracture (simple skull). [16-18 Hours] Moored as before. Recovered the above listed aircraft. Cole, D. F., F1c, USN was returned to the ship by private vehicle, having received the following injury upon being thrown from a horse he was riding while on liberty. Laceration to lip; contusion of front teeth, pain in apigastric? region. Negligence not apparent. He was treated and admitted to Sick Bay. Taylor, Ensign, USN [16-20 Hours] Moored as before. 1700: Hoisted in plane CS-15 to starboard. 1715: Set Special Anti-submarine condition of readiness in AA Battery. 1758: Hoisted out plane CS-14 to starboard, pilot, Ensign R. E. Cheney, USNR, to search for plane CS-13. 1815: Received notification from USS CHICAGO that plane CS-13 [with pilot, Ensign J. D. Taylor & passenger, Donald A. Rholl, ARM3c] was forced down at 1730 in Hervey Bay, Australia. [Read what happened] 1855: Hoisted in plane CS-14 to starboard. June 13th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Moored port side to Pinkenba Railroad Wharf, Brisbane, Australia [4-8 Hours] Moored as before. The following planes were hoisted out to starboard for submarine patrol; CS-14, pilot, Ensign R. E. Cheney CS-16, pilot, Lt. (jg) E. H. Katenkamp June 14th through 16th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Moored port side to Pinkenba Railroad Wharf, Brisbane, Australia, in special anti-submarine condition of readiness. Receiving fresh water and telephone services from the dock. Routine day of Shore Patrol, taking on provisions, water, fuel, launching & hoisting aircraft, etc. [0-4 Hours] Moored port side to Pinkenba Railroad Wharf, Brisbane, Australia [8-12 Hours] Moored as before. Commenced making & completing preparations for getting underway. Pilot J. M. Aherne came on board. Got underway for Moreton Bay, Australia, in accordance with COM TASK FORCE 44, Confidental hand message. Pilot at the Conn., Captain, Exec. Officer, & Navigator on the Bridge. Standing down the Brisbane River into Moreton Bay. [12-16 Hours] Steaming as before, maneuvering incident to leaving port. Pilot J. M. Aherne left the ship. Launched aircraft. Set condition of Readiness I for scheduled firing exercises. Fired to port several rounds of ammunition. No casualties. Secured from Condition of Readiness I, set regular sea detail. Recovered aircraft. Made all preparations for & anchored in C-4, Moreton Bay, Australia. |
