In the name of the President of the United States, the Commander Battleship
and Cruisers, Pacific Fleet, takes great pleasure in presenting the to Lawrence Conrad Metzler, Lieutenant, USN for service set forth in the following CITATION:
"For heroic achievement as director pointer of the
controlling main battery director on board the USS SALT LAKE CITY
during the engagement off Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal with strong
Japanese forces on the night of 11-12 October, 1942. Lieutenant Metzler
discharged his important duties with remarkable coolness, skill and
determination. His immediate and precise response to orders, the positive
efficient manner in which he pointed his director and operated the master
key through this fast and violent action, contributed considerably
to the success of our forces in the battle. His cool, skillful and
efficient performance of duty was in keeping with the highest traditions
of the United States Naval Service."
