US FLAG Lawrence Metzler, CFC, passed away on September 21, 1980
Feb. 3rd, 2001

Larry Metzler b. 1918 d. 1980

He joined the USN in 1936 and went to Boot Camp at San Diego, CA.

Served on the USS New York (BB) Europe
He was aboard her when the fleet went to Europe for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth

Fire Control School, Wash. DC

He served on the USS Salt Lake City CA25 until after the battle of Cape Esperance where he received the Bronze Star Medal. He received the Bronze Star [See Below] for taking over in the foretop as main battery fire controlman when ball-red-02 Deceased Harold "Gus" E. Kronquist, Chief Fire Controlman was killed alongside him. He was killed by an 8" shell that hit the armorplate near the waterline and exploded without penetrating into the ammunition storage compartment. Bro. Marvin Metzler was in the Radio Shack at the time and couldn't hardly wait to see if his brother was OK.

The issuing of the medal for Lawrence did not show up in the cruise book because it was not issued until after he left the ship.

Served on the USS South Dakota
Retired after 23 years as a Commander

for service set forth in the following
CITATION:

       "For heroic achievement as director pointer of the controlling main battery director on board the USS SALT LAKE CITY during the engagement off Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal with strong Japanese forces on the night of 11-12 October, 1942. Lieutenant Metzler discharged his important duties with remarkable coolness, skill and determination. His immediate and precise response to orders, the positive efficient manner in which he pointed his director and operated the master key through this fast and violent action, contributed considerably to the success of our forces in the battle. His cool, skillful and efficient performance of duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
