November 1st, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Steaming in condition of readiness II in company with Task Group 66.7. Radar contact, distance 5 miles proved to be friendly ship. Ceased zigzagging in order to avoid merchant ship and escort. [4-8 Hours] Steaming as before. Sighted Island of Oahu, distance 35 miles. Commenced maneuvering incident to launching aircraft CS-16, pilot, Cheney & CS-14, pilot, Katenkamp. Making preparations for entering port. Standing into Pearl Harbor, T.H. Captain at the Conn., Exec. Officer and Navigator on the Bridge. Passed Pearl Harbor entrance buoy. [8-12 Hours] Steaming as before. Stopped and received pilot, Mr. Oddisen. Commenced maneuvering, standing into Pearl Harbor, T.H. Pilot at the Conn., Captain, Exec. Officer & Navigator on the Bridge. Moored, port side to Berth B-2, Pearl Harbor, T. H. Sutton, C. C., MM1c reported on board from temporary duty with the power boats. Gailey, W. S., APC left the ship to report to commandant of nearest Naval District for futher transfer. Maxwell, R. G.(C.), Ensign, D-V(S), left the ship to proceed and report to Commandant 14th Naval District for duty. Received for transfer the following named Japanese Prisoners of War to Captain G. C. November 29th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Resting on keel and bilge blocks in Drydock #2, Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor, T.H. [4-8 Hours] Drydocked as before. Wells, S. F., CTC(AA) returned from 2 days leave. Kingston, B., Ensign in charge of twenty men, left the ship to proceed to Camp Andrews, Nanakuli, Oahu, for a three-day period of recreation. [8-12 Hours] Drydocked as before. Note[in Deck Log]: In accordance with Art. 1361 (I), US navy Regs., the first Lt. completed inspection of outer, under-water portion of the hull. Conditions were as follows: C. & R. valves were about 10% blocked by sea growth (algae); the inboard, horizontal brace of the strut for #1 shaft was loose and the rivets badly corroded; there was heavy pitting on the leading edge of all struts and the rudder; all other underwater fittings were satisfactory. Commenced disconnecting all utilities from the dock. McKalson, Bruce M., Lt.(jg) was detached from this vessel and ordered to report to Supt. of Shipbuilding, Bethlehem Steel Co. for duty in commissioning and fitting out the USS BOSTON. Ceased flooding drydock. Commenced opening cassion. Received towline from Tug astern. Got underway in tow to shift berths. Captain, Exec. Officer, & Navigator on the Bridge. Pilot at the Conn. Stern passed end of drydock. Received tug alonside on the starboard quarter. [12-16 Hours] Bow passed sill of drydock. Ship clear of drydock. Cast off Tug on Starboard quarter. Moored port side to Berth 21, Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor, T. H. Pilot, R. L. Greene left the ship. Commenced receiving steam, electricity, compressed air, fresh & flushing water from the dock. Caplinger, Frank C.,[R.?] Acting Pay Clerk was detached from this vessel and ordered to proceed to report to the nearest US Naval District for temporary duty with the Supply Corps., pending further assignment. |
