USS SLC...USN...James E. Denney, AMM2c

US FLAG James Denney, AMM2c left this world, Thursday, Jan. 26, 1978 from a heart attack while plowing snow after a blizzard

Note from Sandy Eskew:
Louise Denney was the FIRST person to contact me about Veterans of the USS SLC and the FIRST person to send me Newspaper Articles about the ship that "Inspired" this website that honors the Veterans and the old Swayback Maru.

Jim was an Aviation Machinist Mate -servicing the planes. He didn't talk about it much, but it sticks in my mind that he was a gunner on the plane when they went up. Also, I believe he said that you flew in the plane that you serviced - a little insurance against carelessness I guess.

I didn't meet Jim until after the war. Although he grew up in Kentucky, he was attending Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI when I met him. I grew up in Big Rapids. He majored in business and accounting and worked in that field during his life time. I was in high school during the war, graduating in 1945. We were married in 1947.

Update from Louise Denney, Jun. 8th, 2000
Jim was awfully thin in this picture. He said that in the early days of the war that they kept missing their supply ship and were eating beans out of the target practice bags. Jim would be so enthralled with this history you have going. Too bad he's not here to appreciate it. Good Work Sandy.
