USS SLC...Enlisted Navy...Robert L. Johnson, MM1c
Robert Johnson passed away in November of 2000 at the age of 78 from complications of
cancer.
April 1st, 2001
Sandy,
I was able to access the web site. IT IS WONDERFUL! I wish I had known
about it before my father died. He would really have enjoyed the articles
and pictures.
My dad's name is Robert L. Johnson. He enlisted in April 1942 and was
discharged November 1945 with the rank of Machinist's Mate 1st Class --
spent his entire time aboard SLC. He later enlisted in the Naval Reserves.
I have been looking through his service records and cannot seem to find
anything to indicate which division he was in. I wish I knew so I could
see if you have a picture on the web site. I will be glad to send you a
photograph of my dad in uniform if you would like. I think I have your
"snail mail" address in the newsletter. My mom gave me the newsletter
because she wanted me to check out the web site.
In fact, I am going to join the association myself so I can stay up on what's
going on! I fully intend to read every article and look at every picture you
have posted. I have a few pictures and if you don't already have them, I
will be happy to send those as well. Also, I have my dad's plaque of the
ship's escutcheon, and I also have his Navy-issued wool blanket still with
his name stamped on it. Unfortunately, the uniform went by the wayside many
years ago! I do, however, have his pea coat.
I miss my dad and I miss hearing him talk about some of his escapades. He
didn't talk a lot about the action they saw. Your website has already made
me feel like a part of him is still here, though I must admit, it brings a
few tears.
If anyone remembers my father, please contact me.
Thank you,
Karen Johnson Elmendorf
