My father was Robert Joseph Sanders. He boarded the SLC on Nov 23, 1942.
I looked at the pictures but couldn’t find him. It is my understanding he was in a gunnery
group but I don’t know the division. You have a wonderful website.
My father was fairly tall for the times...6' 3". He was born in St. Louis, Mo. in 1920.
I received his discharge records. Thank you for your help. I feel like I have gotten to know my
father better thru these records.
He had his Naval training at Great Lakes, Illinois and reported to the USS Salt Lake City on
Nov. 23rd, 1942. He was in the engagement off the Komandorskie Islands March 26,1943 in a
battle in which the enemy force was twice the size of our own force.
He participated in Kiska Island bombardments Aug. 2 - 12, 1943.

He participated in the Nansei Shoto Campaign, the Gilbert Islands Operation from Nov. 18th,
1943 to Jane. 21, 1944.
He participated in the Marshall Islands Operation from Jan. 21, to Mar 23rd, 1944, then in task
force raids on Palau Island. Signed by Capt. L.W. Busby
He then transferred to Point Matara, anti-aircraft school and also at the end
of his service was on the USS Anacostia. His separation was Oct. 20th, 1945 from
Sampson, New York. His ratings held were as, s2c, s1c, gm3c, gm2c. His ribbons
included American area, Asiatic Pacific 5 stars, Good Conduct medal.
