Roderick Woolworth, left, of Brewerton, recently made arrangements for his
model of the USS SALT LAKE CITY to be shipped to the Naval and Marine Corps
Reserve Center in Salt Lake City where it will be displayed with the ship's
bell. Woolworth served on the USS SLC for three years during WWII. He
began constructing the model in 1973 and completed it three years later. The
model was made from scratch with the exception of anchor chain, ladders,
lifeline stanchions and lifeline. The model was built to a scale of one foot
equals 100 feet. The model measures six feel long. The actual ship was 589 feet
long, nearly as long as two football fields. It was constructed from balsa wood.
The hull is hollow and the ship weighs approximately six pounds, 20 pounds with the base
he constructed.
