April 1st, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Moored in Berth C-3, Pearl Harbor, TH. [4-8 Hours] Moored as before. Sites, Frank J., CSF(PA), USN and Sutton, Clifford L., MM2c, USN, remained in port for temporary duty with ship's boats. The following named Officers & Men reported on board for gunnery observation: |

[8-12 Hours] Moored as before Completed preparations for getting underway. 0824 Got underway, in accordance with approved operations order, in company with TASK FORCE 16. Captain at the Conn., Executive Officer, and Navigator, on the Bridge. Commenced maneuvering incident to launching aircraft, and to conducting scheduled gunnery practices. Catapulted the following airplanes, as indicated: 5-CS-14 to Starboard, Pilot, Ensigh R. P. Morse, USNR 5-CS-13 to Port, Pilot, Ensign R. E. Cheney, USNR 5-CS-15 to Starboard, Pilot, Lt. (jg) W. J. Tate, Jr., USN 5-CS-16 to Port, Pilot, Lt. (jg) E. H. Katenkamp, USNR. [12-16 Hours] Steaming as before Commenced firing 5" battery & Anti-Aircraft Batteries. Set condition of Readiness III throughout ship. Ceased firing: "DRONE" was knocked down. [18-20 Hours] Steaming as before. Wiggs, R. M., S1c, USN received simple fracture, right humerus, [2531 18 "H"], when he grabbed hold of the revolving extractor ring of the extractor machine in the laundry. The man's hand was caught on some clothes and pulled into the machine. Man treated in Sick Bay and admitted to binnical list. April 2nd, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Steaming in Condition of readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 16. [16-18 Hours] Steaming as before, incident to entering Pearl Harbor, TH. port. Hoisted out #1 Motorlaunch and transferred Wiggs, R. M., S1c to the US Naval Hospital for treatment. 1710: Moored in Berth C-5, Pearl Harbor, TH. [18-20 Hours] Morred as before Engle, A. D., Ensign, USN returned to the ship to duty, having been discharged from treatment at US Naval Hospital, Pearl Harbor, TH. Mayfield, V. A., HA1c, USN reported aboard for duty with bag, hammock, records and accounts. April 3rd, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Moored in Berth C-5, Pearl Harbor, TH. [8-12 Hours] Moored as before. Received Morefield, G. G., Pvt., USMC on board for duty with bag, rifle and staff returns. Transferred Fich, T. P., F1c, USN and Thrailkill, Jr., H. F., F1c, USN, with bags, hammocks, records & accounts, for duty to US REC. STAT., Pearl Harbor, TH., FFT to US DESTROYER BASE, San Diego, CA. with instruction, and ultimate assignment to USS FREDERICK FUNSTON [12-16 Hours] Moored as before. Tyree, David M., Lt. Comdr., USN, was relieved as gunnery Officer of this vessel by Shaw, William R., Lt. Comdr., USN Lt. Comdr. David M. Tyree was detached from this vessel and ordered to report to COMMANDER CARRIER DIV. ONE, for temporary duty as Staff Gunnery Officer. Kincaid, Robert H., SM3c, USN , reported aboard for duty, with bag & hammock, after being detached from US Naval Hospital, Pearl Harbor, TH.; orders will follow by registered mail. April 4th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Moored in Berth C-5, Pearl Harbor, TH. [12-16 Hours] Moored as before. Frame, C. H., Lieut., (DC), V(S), USNR, reported aboard for duty. [16-18 Hours] Moored as before Transferred Burwell, J. E., PhM1c, USN, to USS MEDUSA for duty, with bag, hammock, records and accounts, April 5th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Moored in Berth C-5, Pearl Harbor, TH. [8-12 Hours] Moored as before White, Jr., S. A., MAtt1c, USN, was discharged from this vessel and the US naval Service, with an honorable discharge, by reason of expiration of enlistment. [Re-enlisted on board, Apr. 6, 1942, for 4 full years] Transferred Vanden Bos, J. H. T., MM1c, USN, with bag, hammock, records, and accounts to USS ANTARES, for duty. [12-16 Hours] Moored as before Transferred Nelson, N. M., F1c, USN to US naval Hospital, Pearl Harbor, TH., for treatment, with bag & hammock. Records and accounts to follow via guard mail. April 6th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Moored in Berth C-5, Pearl Harbor, TH. [8-12 Hours] Moored as before S. A. White, Jr., MAtt1c, USN, re-enlisted on board, for a period of (4) four full years. Brown, T. A., Lieut., USN was sworn in as a Lieutenant this date. Stephen, E., CPhM, USN, was sworn in as Pharmacist, USN, this date. Due to increased wind velocity, 16 fathoms of "I" part 1-1/8" wire was added to stern buoy as a prevention. [16-18 Hours] Moored as before. Heller, E. L., SF2c, USN, was transferred to USS ENTERPRISE, for duty with bag, hammock, records & accounts. Water barge #16 delivered 40,000 gallons of fresh water. [20-24 Hours] Moored as before. Received Bennett, A. G., rate not shown aboard for duty, with bag, hammock, records & accounts. April 7th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Moored in Berth C-5, Pearl Harbor, TH. [12-16 Hours] Moored as before. Naish, Wendell, Lieut., USN was detached from this vessel and ordered to duty at the Navy Yard, Washington, DC. Robert J. Casey, war correspondent for the Chicago Daily News, came on board, by direction of CINCPAC. Byrd, Orvil F., Lieut. Comdr., USN was detached from this vessel and ordered to duty as assistant to Supply Officer, Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor, TH. [16-20 Hours] Moored as before Lombardi, Patsy, CPhM.(AA), USN, was received on board for duty, pay accounts and records were with him. Transferred Gibson, B. E., S1c, USN to US Naval Hospital, Pearl Harbor, TH., with bag, hammock, records & accounts. April 8th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Moored in Berth C-5, Pearl Harbor, TH. [8-12 Hours] Moored as before. Transferred Armantrout, Richard L., RM2c, USN, to Pacific Fleet Radar School, Pearl Harbor, TH., with bag, hammock, records and accounts, for temporary duty. Transferred Sutton, C. L., MM2c, USN, to Service Force, Pacific Fleet, with bag and hammock, records and accounts having been previously forwarded to COMMANDER SERVICE FORCE, for temporary duty. Commenced preparations for getting underway. Received Creamer, George R., S2c, USN on board for duty, with bag and hammock. Records and accounts to follow by registered mail. 1132: Got underway for scheduled operations, in accordance with CINCPAC Desp. Captain at the Conn., Executive Officer, and Navigator on the Bridge. Standing out of Pearl Harbor, TH. [12-16 Hours] Steaming, maneuvering incident to leaving port. Formed in Channel Formation #1, astern of USS ENTERPRISE, Fleet Guide. Sighted USS SABINE and USS ELLET. [18-20 Hours] Steaming as before. Allen, R. M., S2c, USN received a sprained right ankle while working. Neglegence not apparent. Treated in Sick Bay, remaining overnight. April 11th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Steaming in Condition of Readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 16. [4-8 Hours] Steaming as before. Drodz, E. J., Ensign, USN made daily inspection of aircraft. Condition satisfactory. April 12th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Steaming in Condition of Readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 16 [8-12 Hours] Steaming as before Planes from USS ENTERPRISE conducted bombing and gunnery exercises on towing spar. Commenced conforming to movements of USS ENTERPRISE launching and recovering aircraft; recovered towing spar. [12-16 Hours] Steaming as before. Set condition I in AA Battery and machine guns. Alexander, W., S2c, USN, received sprained left knee while in mess hall during noon meal; slipped on wet deck; retained in Sick Bay. Launched the following aircraft: CS-16, pilot, Ensign R. P., Morse CS-13, pilot, Lt. (jg) W. J. Tate CS-15, pilot, Ensign J. D. Taylor CS-14, pilot, R. E. Cheney [16-18 Hours] Steaming as before. Recovered aircraft. [20-24 Hours] Steaming as before. 2200: Weather thickened, misting slightly, visibility reduced to 1000 yards. 2300: Visibility increased to 2000 yards. April 13th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Steaming in condition of Readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 16 [8-12 Hours] Steaming as before 0832: Commenced maneuvering to conform to movements of USS ENTERPRISE launching and recovering airplanes, and to take assigned station in cruising disposition, 7-V. 0952: On station, in column, 1000 yards astern of USS NASHVILLE, on fleet course, at fleet speed 15 knots. USS NASHVILLE on station, in cruising disposition 7-V. USS HORNET fleet guide, at fleet center. USS BENHAM came up on the starboard quarter and delivered official mail. [12-16 Hours] Steaming as before. Observed steady and unusual dropping of barometer readings throughout the watch. |
