September 1st, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Steaming in condition of Readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 18, in cruising disposition #1, with USS WASP as guide. [4-8 Hours] Steaming as before, maneuvering & conforming to movements of USS WASP conducting aircraft operations. [8-12 Hours] Steaming as before. Sighted Vatagnia Island [12-18 Hours] Steaming as before. Sighted Meralav Island, Banks Islands, dist. 10 miles. Sighted USS LAFFEY & another friendly ship, dist. abt. 12 miles. [20-24 Hours] Steaming as before. Sighted land, Pentecost Island, dist. 22 miles. September 2nd, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Steaming in company with TASK FORCE 18, in cruising disposition #1 with USS WASP, fleet guide. [4-8 Hours] Steaming as before. Sighted Efate Island, New Hebrides, dist. abt. 30 miles. Sighted Eramanga Island, New Hebrides, dist. 34 miles. [8-12 Hours] Steaming as before. Sighted Efate Island, New Hebrides, dist. 33 miles. Conformed to movements of USS WASP conducting aircraft operations. Set Condition II. Sighted Tanna Island, dist., 45 miles. [12-16 Hours] Steaming as before. Huestis, D. E., S2c, received a D.V. sprain to left ankle while engaged in ship's work. Negligence not apparent. Treated and retained in Sick Bay. September 3rd, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Steaming in condition of readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 18, with USS WASP, Fleet Guide. [4-8 Hours] Steaming as before. Sighted Isle of Pines, dist. 35 miles. [8-12 Hours] Steaming as before. Received USS BUCHANAN alongside the starboard quarter for transfer of guard mail. Commenced conforming to movements of USS WASP in launching & recovering aircraft. Sighted Isle of Pines, New Caledonia, dist. 51 miles. [12-16 Hours] Steaming as before. Sighted Amedee Lighthouse, dist. 25 miles. Made all preparations for entering port. Stopped & received picket boat alongside. Commenced maneuvering on carious courses & speeds standing into Dumbea Harbor, New Caledonia. Captain at the Conn. [16-18 Hours] Maneuvering incident to entering port. Anchored in Berth #41, Dumbea Bay, Noumes, New Caledonia. The following men were discharged from this vessel & the US Naval Service with an honorable discharge by expiration of enlistment. |
The above listed men re-enlisted on Sept. 4th, 1942, for a full four years.
[18-20 Hours] Anchored as before. Commenced provisioning ship. Lathrop, Arthur V., S1c received a laceration of his buttock from a hook while on a working party. Negligence not apparent. Treated in & admitted to Sick Bay. September 4th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Anchored in Berth #41, Dumbea Bay, Noumea, New Caledonia. Ship's present: Task Force 18 & various fleet auxiliaries and merchant crafts. [4-8 Hours] Anchored as before. Received SS WESTERN SUN alongside to starboard. Commenced receiving fuel. [8-12 Hours] Anchored as before. Hoisted out the following aircraft as indicated. CS-14, pilot, Ensign J. D. Taylor CS-15, pilot, Lt. W. J. Tate, Jr. CS-16, pilot, Lt.(jg) R. P. Morse 1110: Completed fueling ship having received 10,162 barrels. 1135: Hoisted in the three above listed aircraft. [12-16 Hours] Anchored as before. The following named men left the ship to report to the Senior Patrol Officer, Noumea, New Caledonia, for temporary duty on Shore Patrol. Sharit, C. R., BM1c, Mayo, B. R., MM1c Thompson, J. E., WT1c 1330: Hoisted out the following airplanes as indicated: CS-15 to port, pilot, Lt.(jg) Katenkamp CS-16 to port, pilot, Ensign Drodz CS-14 to starboard, pilot, Lt.(jg) Cheney Herrington, W. L., S1c was struck on the cheek by the leg of a mess table while stowing them in the mess hall. He received lacerations, contusions of right cheek. Negligence not apparent. Treated in Sick Bay and returned to duty. Hoisted in CS-15 to starboard & CS-14 to port. [16-20 Hours] Anchored as before. 1605: Hoisted in CS-16 to starboard. The above listed 3 men returned aboard having completed temporary Shore Patrol Duty. September 5th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Anchored in Berth #41, Dumbea Bay, Noumea, New Caledonia. [8-12 Hours] Anchored as before. Lee, Chester M., Ensign, USN reported for duty on board this vessel. 0836: Hoisted out the following airplanes as follows: CS-16 to port, pilot, Grow, B. E., Comdr. CS-14 to port, pilot, Chambliss, W. C., Lt. Comdr. CS-15 to starboard, pilot, Lt. W. J. Tate Whistle & siren place out of commission for repair purposes. [12-16 Hours] Anchored as before. The following men left the ship on temporary shore patrol duty: Silewski, Frank, GM1c Eskew, Weldon V., MM1c Mihalka, Alex M., Cox Hoisted in the above listed airplanes & crew Lott, George, Acting Pay Clerk, reported for duty aboard this vessel. [16-18 Hours] Anchored as before. Commenced making preparations for getting underway. 1644: Hoisted out the following aircraft: CS-16 to port, pilot, Lt.(jg) R. E. Cheney CS-14 to starboard, pilot, Lt. W. J. Tate CS-15 to starboard, pilot, Lt. E. H. Katenkamp 1755: Hoisted in the above listed aircraft. [18-20 Hours] Anchored as before. The above named men returned aboard having completed temporary shore patrol duty. September 7th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Anchored in Berth #41, Dumbea Bay, Noumea, New Caledonia. [8-12 Hours] Anchored as before. 0858: Hoisted out the following aircraft. CS-15 to port, pilot, Lt. E. H. Katenkamp CS-14 to starboard, pilot, Lt.(jg) R. E. Cheney CS-16 to port, pilot, Lt. O. G. Sexton, USN, with passenger, Lt. F. G. Marshall, USN, [pilots from USS WASP]. 0930: Set Condition I in the Main & Anti-aircraft batteries for drill. 1040: Captain R. H. Bevin, RN, of the HMZS LEANDER came aboard to call & left the ship at 1054. 1040: Hoisted in plane CS-15 to starboard & plane CS-14 to port. 1103: The SS DIPLODON came alongside to starboard to deliver aviation gasoline. 1120: Hoisted out plane CS-14 to port, pilot, Taylor & plane CS-15 to port, pilot, Morse. [12-16 Hours] Anchored as before. The following men left the ship on temporary shore patrol duty: Kellett, T. A., GM2c Lyon, W. M., MM2c Ziemer, K. H., CM2c 1320: Hoisted out the above listed aircraft and pilots. Completed fueling from SS DIPODON having received 1700 gals. aviation fuel. Drodz, E. J., AV(N), USNR was detached from this vessel and ordered to duty on T. Commander Carriers, Pacific Fleet for training & assignment to Carrier Replacement Squadrons. Cobb, C. O., Major, USMC was detached from this vessel and ordered to duty at MCG, San Diego, CA. report to CG, Amphibious Corps., Pacific Fleet. 1400: Hoisted in plane CS-14 to starboard. 1400: The Captain left the ship to call on the CO of the HMS LEANDER. [16-18 Hours] Anchored as before. Brittain, Joe Tillman, Elec., USN was detached from this vessel and ordered to duty on board the USS NORTH CAROLINA. 1730: The Captain returned to the ship. [18-20 Hours] Anchored as before. The above listed Men returned aboard having completed temporary shore patrol duty in Noumea. September 8th, 1942 [4-8 Hours] [Note: This section unreadable, but appears the SLC got underway] [8-12 Hours] Maneuvering incident to taking station in cruising disposition No. 1, with USS WASP, Fleet center, Fleet Guide, distance 2500 yards. [12-16 Hours] Steaming as before. 1452: Catapulted the following airplanes as indicated. CS-14 to starboard, pilot, Taylor CS-16 to port, pilot, Katenkamp CS-15 to port, pilot, Morse Set Condition of Readiness I in AA Battery for firing exercise. Commenced firing at 1557 & ceased at 1558 [16-18 Hours] Steaming as before. 1605: Commenced firing 2nd run. ammunition expended, 32 rounds 5"; 157 rounds 1.1", & 300 rounds 20mm. Ceased firing at 1606. 1658: Recovered the above listed aircraft. September 10, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Steaming in Condition of Readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 18 with USS GUADALUPE guide at Fleet center. [4-8 Hours] Steaming as before. Sighted USS JUNEAY, USS DUNCAN, USS LANSDOWNE, USS LAFFEY & USS LARDNER, dist. abt. 20 miles. Commenced maneuvering to take station. [18-20 Hours] Steaming as before. 1800: Set all clocks ahead one hour to conform with zone time -12. Sounded General Alarm for drill. September 11th, 1942 [0-4 Hours] Steaming in condition of readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 18 with USS GUADALUPE as Fleet Guide at fleet center. [8-12 Hours] Steaming as before. Received in tow alongside USS GUADALUPE, starboard side to port side, for fueling. Received 87,738 gals fuel, 1,942 gals. diesel fuel. Cast off USS GUADALUPE and commenced maneuvering to take station 2,200 yards from USS SAN FRANCISCO for screening fueling group. [12-16 Hours] Steaming as before. 1340: Launched the following planes as indicated for inner air patrol. CS-14 to port, pilot, Taylor; CS-15 to starboard, pilot, Tate; CS-16 to port, pilot, Morse. USS HELENA joined the formation. [16-18 Hours] Steaming as before. 1742: Recovered above listed aircraft & crew. |
