USS SLC..."Enlisted Navy"...Edward R. "Reg" Howard, ARM1c
Edward R. "Reg" Howard passed away on June 2nd, 2000 Mar. 3rd, 2000 I just found your site. This is wonderful. My dad, Edward Reginald "Reg" Howard and I just spent some hours going over old photos only a week ago. You will find him listed as a crew member. (about 1938-1943.) Mar. 4th, 2000 E. R. Howard reported aboard 31 December 1938. Left the ship 3 October 1942 and detached from USN to USNR so that he could attend flight school where he was commissioned July 43 and spent the balance of the war flying blimps. But I thought you might get a kick out of something that I knew and just thought about again while reading "Torpedo Junction." On 20 January 1942 E. R.'s SOC went down..close to out of gas. (The pilot's decision.) He was the radioman who signaled with the flash light. He told this story to me just last February. But it was a much more detailed story and STILL full of amazement that Halsey would release the ship to pick up an airplane and two men. Can you imagine the Japanese doing that? Or another thought, can you guess what would have happened to these fliers if the Japanese saw them first? Stephen Howard |
