Sept. 28th, 2002

Letter found in SLC Memorabilia written to ball-red-02 Deceased Myron Varland on Aug. 23, 1993 from Keith A. Self, son of SLC Veteran William Monroe Self.

Dear Mr. Varland,

My father, William Monroe Self, was assigned to the USS SLC as a "Gunner's Mate" [records show S1c] from Aug. 1944 to early 1946. His service number was 338-76-00. Unfortunately, my father passed away this past Feb. [1993], for I was planning to send him a plane ticket to attend your reunion next month.

I am writing to ask you to pass on to those in attendance that I am interested in hearing from anyone who remembers my father or had any fond stories that they would like to share with his son/family.

Before he passed away, he gave me his Blue Jacket Manual and his address book with several names in it:

I remember him talking about Joe-Joe White & Donnie Moberg, but don't recall much of the stories. He often talked about his shin being caught under and cut by the paravane during rough seas off of Japan. I would like to know more about his Navy Days.

Thank you,
Sincerely,
