USS SLC...USN...Robert L. Burroughs, CRM

US FLAG Robert Burroughs passed away on January 5, 1993

First, I compliment you on the wonderful web site regarding the SLC. This is just the information I have been looking for.

My father is Robert Louis Burroughs, CRM, #37 in the photo of the Radio Gang sent in by Jim Fratianni.

He passed away on January 5, 1993, dying in his sleep from a pulmonary embolism. Today, September 17, is his birthday - he would have been 79 years of age.

He was a member of the SLC Association and attended at least one of the reunions. After he died, I volunteered to notify the association of his death, but I have not yet done so. Since yesterday, my father has been letting me know that I have been derelict in my duties. This morning I promised to rectify the situation, since I have access to the internet through a friend's computer. Yours was the first web site I visited, and I'm certainly glad I did.

I learned that the next reunion is to be held Sept. 25, and although I doubt if I will be able to make it, I will definitely be able to notify the association president of my father's death.

I also see on your web site a photo and letters from ball-red-02 Deceased James R. Murphy, RM1c. I believe he is my father's good buddy "Murph," whom I remember from my childhood. I would be absolutely delighted if you will give him my name and address, or send his address to me. I would very much like to correspond with him.

Thank you so much for this valuable service. I have enjoyed the site immensely and hope to renew the contacts which I have allowed to lapse over the past few years.

Sincerely,
Martha Jean Burroughs Russell

Dau., Martha Burroughs Russell found these papers in her parents' things.

"MARRIAGE - NAVY STYLE

Wilt thou, Jack, take this woman as thy wedded wife? To live together insofar as the Bureau of Naval Personnel will allow? Wilt thou love her, comfort, honor and keep her? Take her to the movies and come home promptly on all 48's?

Aye aye Sir.

Wilt thou Jane take this sailor as thy wedded husband, bearing in mind liberty hours, ship schedules, watches, sudden orders, uncertain main connections and all other problems of Navy life? Wilt thou serve him, love him, honor and wait for him, learn to wash, fold and press his uniforms and keep the smoking lamp lit for him at home?

I Jack take thee Jane as my wedded wife from 1700 to 0730 as far as permitted by my commanding officer, liberty hours subject to change without notice, for better for worse, for earlier or later, and I promise to write at least once a week.

I Jane take thee Jack as my wedded husband subject to orders of the Officer of the Day, changing residence whenever the ship moves, to have and to hold as long as my allotment comes through regularly, and there I give my troth.

Then let no man put asunder what God and the Bureau of Personnel have brought together, by writ of the authority in Navy reg's subject to regulations of BUPERS bulletins concerning matrimony. You are now man and wife

By Direction of the Commanding Officer"
