US FLAG Ray A. Calvert passed away in 1952
May 9th, 2005

My name is Bonnie Shaver. My father, Ray Anderson Calvert, served on the USS Salt Lake City from the years 1936 to 1943. I was astonished and thrilled to find your web site, and then to find my dad's name mentioned by a couple of his shipmates. I would love to share the many photos I have, many of which I believe were taken aboard the SLC. The photos don't have any notations, so I don't know for sure that they are from the SLC. I will be scanning the photos in and will send them to you soon.

I would be thrilled to hear from any of my dad's shipmates with any stories or remembrances you have of him. Unfortunately, Ray died in 1952 when I was 3 years old. My sister, brother and I don't have many memories of him. It would give us such joy to hear from those who knew him.

Please share my name, e-mail address and home address at your web site. Although I cannot attend the reunion in September, if you are planning to have a bulletin board of photos or correspondence from those who cannot attend, please let me know.

Your web site is fantastic and so well done. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your work and dedication to the memories of the men who served on the Salt Lake City.

Sandy,
Thanks again for sending me the name and address of the gentleman from Florida, Steve Starwyck ball-red-02, who served with my Dad. I did write to him and he promptly wrote back, telling me he would send me some photos of my Dad. And then sure enough, a week or two later I received a short note and some photos from him! It just made my day. I'm so glad I found your web site.

One photo is of my Dad, Ray Anderson Calvert. He served on the SLC from September, 1936 to February, 1943. The documents I have say that his title was "Captain's Writer" and describes the duties as: "In charge of the Captain's Office, Courts Martial Reporter." His battlestation was: "JA Talker on the Bridge."

Again, thank you so much for all you do with this web site. I look forward to keeping in touch.

Bonnie Shaver
