Letter written by Lyle E. "Joe" Carter on May 30th, 2001 to the USS SLC Association
I want to send this note to say hi to my old friends and hello to my young
shipmates. For the past month or so I have been under treatment for
serious illnesses at the Sleepy Hollow Manor Nursing Home in Virginia. I
would be delighted to hear from some of you guys to bring back old memories.
Signed by "Joe" Carter
"A few of the things I did"
I was 5th Division 5" gun loader - Coxswain #3 motor launch.
1st Lieut. Yeoman (I replaced Tom E. Craig,
Y2c)
Captain's Office--Captain's writer, first with
Frank A. Rapp, CY(PA) and
with
Ray A. Calvert, CY,
then worked under Frank Willoughby Moore,
Warrant Officer Ship's Clerk. I was appointed ensign and Frank worked for
me.
Selected for j.g. and in 1945 I was transferred to the new cruiser, USS
Los Angeles and served as Communications Officer and many other collateral
duties, one of which permitted me to publish the "Hornblowers' Handbook.
Officer-in-Chief of Mobile Boat Pool #1, and sent to the Korean conflict,
to CINCNFEAM and thence to BUPERS---Officer Placement, then to Naples,
Italy as CINCNELM (South).
Finally, the National War College, Washington, DC, Security and Bookstore,
then to retirement from the Navy in June 1961 and a 35 year career as a
Real Estate Broker in Northern Virginia area as owner and principal broker
at Carter Realty Inc.
The above is correct to the best of my current memory.
The SLC was a great ship and I was blessed and honored in having served on
her, and with the salts of the earth

Charles A. "Chuck" Vasey, Lt.(jg)
Robert C. "Bob" Drust, CY
David L. "Dave" Gunter, Y2c

Shipmate Carter
This may be one of the longest good-byes on record, but...whoever heard of
an Irishman who was short of words!
