Dear Sandy,

First let me introduce myself. I boarded the USS SLC in November 1939 and served on board until March, 1944. I worked primarily in the Executive Officer's Office during this period, eventually in-charge, and worked with most of the Officers onboard during this period.

I did not know your Father, and thus don't remember him. I can say that he has a daughter to be proud of, and that you are making quite an impression on the members of the SLC Association. Thank you for your good work - we will help you in any way that we can.

I am a Plank Owner of the U.S.S. BOUGAINVILLE (CVE-100), a "baby" aircraft carrier built by Kaiser Shipbuilding in Astoria, Oregon. A great many were built on commercial cargo vessel hulls called "C-3 hulls" and were commonly known as Kaiser Coffins.

This name came from the fact that they were built with minimum strength and the ship's sides would pop in and out in heavy seas. They were very valuable to the war effort, both as replenishment carriers to the "big boys" and as operating carriers. Most of them have been de-commissioned and probably dismantled.

I served on this ship for one year, 1944-1945, before being transferred to Post Graduate School at Harvard University.

I ended up making the Navy a career, serving 24 years. I retired on August 1, 1960 with rank of Commander Supply Corps.
