From the SLC Deck Logs on Jan. 6th, 1942

The Captain held Meritorious Mast and awarded the following commendation:
Drust, R. C., S1c, USNR

Commended for excellence in performance of duty as battle lookout in sighting a plane crash at sea on Dec. 31st, 1941. Although the SLC was the leading ship in column and therefore farthest from the crash, he sighted the crash before anyone on this or other ships, thereby enabling this vessel to report the crash.
