Radio messages received this morning from the USS Salt Lake City, due in
Puget Sound navy yard around noon today, said the 9,000-ton heavy cruiser
would be delayed because of bad weather conditions.
The report stated the vessel had encountered heavy head winds of gale
velocity along the northern Oregon and southern Washington coasts, and would
probably not arrive here until late tonight or tomorrow.
The Salt Lake city, recently detached from the battle force in San Diego-
San Pedro area, is en-route to Puget sound navy yard for a three month
routine overhaul.
Additional radio messages posted at naval headquarters here today said storm
warnings had been raised along the entire southern Washington coast and around
the mouth of the Columbia River. All light craft were waned to remain in
harbor and only vessels of considerable tonnage were able to negotiate the
bar.
Further weather reports from naval radio stations and ships around the
Panama Canal zone and the northern Mexican coast, told of serious storm
conditions existing off the coast of northern and central Mexico, with winds
approaching hurricane proportions.
