U.S.S. SLC...USN...Frank W. Gorham, Lt(jg)
Frank W. "Doc" Gorham passed away in 1982. Information from son, James Gorham Oct. 19th, 2021 from son James Gorham My father aboard the ship, sometime in 1944-5, he shipped aboard June, 1944. You can see in in picture of the rough operating room conditions with piping and some kind of boiler in the background, and judging from the grim look on his face and soiled operating gown, he likely just operated on some wounded sailors, one of whom appears in the background. I’ve been trying to narrow down the date of this photo. I’ll let you know what I find out. There’s additional history with him, but I’m having a harder time digging it up. He received a service commendation while aboard the SLC, having shipped over with his medical bag to treat the wounded after a kamikaze attack on another nearby ship, and treating the wounded while still under enemy fire. We’ve lost the paper and commendation on that, but are still trying to research the details and get copies. I think he passed about 1982. He was 72. I believe he was in his 30’s when he enlisted, he was in medical school when the war broke out, and after he completed that and perhaps some residency requirement he enlisted as a medical officer, was sent out on USS Salt Lake from Mare Island if I’m not mistaken.
