Sandy,
My uncle, Vernon A. Grave, served on board the USS SLC- April - Oct. 12th, 1942. He was killed in action at the "Battle of Cape Esperance". When I was a young boy, my Grandma used to tell me about my Dad's older brother, who was killed in the Pacific somewhere around the Solomon Islands.
There were four boys in the family. My uncle Vernon was the second oldest. He was only 18 years old when he died in the battle. Kenneth-the oldest served in the Army-Air Corps. and stayed state side the duration of the war. Harry- served in Gen. Patton's 3rd Army and was in the Battle of the Bulge. My Dad, the youngest, followed his oldest brother and joined the Army-Air Corps. in 1945 just before the war ended.
If you could put me in touch with anyone who may have served with my uncle or would have known my uncle, I would greatly appreciate it.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the USSSLC website. I have literally spent the last 3 days of my vacation researching all the info I could find via interenet regarding the USS Salt Lake City.
Thank you for all your work and efforts to put this website together.
I am hoping to make the reunion this year in New Orleans and I hope to meet you at that time.
