Sandy,

I have not been able to find a photo of my father during his service on the Salt Lake City. However, I have run across what I believe is a photo of the VN Squadron 8D5 Aviation Division, which won the Herbert Schiff Trophy 1935-36.

My father was George Wilmer Martin, born June 23, 1907 in Magazine, Arkansas.

He enlisted in the Navy on January 31, 1927.

He reported on board SLC in November 16, 1935 as a Yeoman 1/C and was transferred off January 9, 1937.

I will send you the pertinent entries in his Continuous Service Record which indicate that he was assigned to the aviation division or VN Squadron 8D5.

His record also records "Qualified Shellback, USS Salt Lake City 20 May 1936 which occured during a cruise between the Canal Zone and Valparaiso, Chile.

He subsequently made Chief Yeoman on February 16, 1939 while with Patron Six at Fleet Air Base Pearl Harbor.

George Wilmer Martin, Y1c, retired as a LCDR USN with 30 years on Feb. 28, 1957.

Best wishes,

Son, George Martin
